Treadmill Workout and Indoor Cycling

Good morning people. A quick update here today. Last night’s treadmill session was really great. It was the first time I have enjoyed running on a treadmill in forever. I am not sure if it was because I had some sort of energy/protein bar before hand or if it was because I was playing around with speeds but it was fun either way. You may have seen yesterday’s post where I laid out my plans for the workout but after a bit of discussion with my girlfriend, increasing the intervals to 2 minutes and some ad libbing on the night it turned in to this:

Now, whilst this was fun I am not entirely sure if it was the best thing I could be doing. The first half seemed relatively pleasant and it wasn’t until 12.5 kmph and up that I started to feel my heart really pump. I think next time it would be a good idea to start my intervals at a much higher speed, maybe 13 kmph and to increase in 0.2 increments. That way I spend a lot more time, running at a much higher speed. It would make the workout more beneficial in the same amount of time.

Either way though, the workout felt good and it was a quick way to get the job done. I had an old school nineties trance playlist which is definitely the best music for treadmill running. There’s not much more inspiring than running to Sandstorm by Darude. It also meant I didn’t have to run in the rain.

Tonight I am back in the gym as I don’t want to do any unnecessary damage to my tattoo (which is really starting to itch by the way). I will be doing my first ever indoor cycling class. I am quite excited and a bit apprehensive as I am not sure if I will be able to keep up with the class. I have a good level of fitness but I still find cycling up hill quite knackering and painful on the legs so I imagine 50 minutes of sprints and hill climbs will be pretty exhausting. It will be good for my overall fitness and is a nice change to be doing in a taper week before the big day on Sunday.

  1. That’s really cool! I like how you laid out your treadmill session. I can get so bored running on the treadmill, but it seems like this would really keep one on their toes. I’m gonna have to try that.

      Thanks! It definitely meant that there was no time to get bored. The constant speed changes meant I just had to focus on the next couple of minutes. Before I knew it, it was over. Definitely better than 30 minutes at one speed.

    I change the speed every minute or two no matter what kind of workout I’m doing on the treadmill – easy, intervals, tempo, etc. It helps with the boredom.
    You can definitely start with a faster interval pace if this wasn’t doing much for you. Another thing you could do is increase your recovery pace. You don’t want it to be too fast, but if you want to give yourself a little more of a challenge, you could gradually increase that as well!

    How did you like the indoor spinning? Oddly I find that I enjoy indoor spinning equally as much as cycling outside, but LOATHE the treadmill in comparison with running outdoors. Hope it was a good workout for you!

      I really enjoyed the spinning. As much as I enjoy cycling in London it is only beneficial for commuting purposes. With all the traffic lights, cars and people it is impossible to build up any sort of sweat whereas after 45 minutes of constant hills and sprints I felt exhausted! Very enjoyable.

      I know what you mean about the treadmill. I never used to like it but something happened the other night. The stars must have aligned because it just felt good.
